Written while living near The Beaches in Toronto, The Freedom Sessions is an honest portrait into the mind of this seasoned Toronto born Musician. With guitar in hand he delivers raspy vocals backed by beautiful haunting melodies with socially conscious lyricism that promotes awareness, unity, and peace.
Black Suit Devil’s debut brings together some of Toronto’s finest Musicians to help expand its sound.
Neil Cameron, a classically trained violinist, has been a part of BSD’s live shows for over two years lending his East Coast style to songs like “Carry On” & the second album single “Dreams”, a song meant to inspire hope in those young and old to reach for their dreams despite any obstacle or opposition. Wesley Collet Taylor on upright bass infuses the record with an element of jazz, as heard on the track “Bullets”, a tribute to the world’s great leaders in the peace through non-violence movements. John Brand, a multi-instrumentalist lending his Piano chops and Colin Riddoch, a young up-and-coming jazz drummer, both add their unique flair throughout The Freedom Sessions.
Featured on the album’s first single “Fumble”, written about the struggle to keep up in day-to-day life and cope with worldwide injustice, is veteran singer/songwriter Chris Staig who adds a southern country twang with his slide guitar and Ansley Simpson an accomplished Anishinaabe Artist whose voice adds a sense of comfort to the dark undertones of the song.
“Blind Man”, with its mystic tribal desert dance feel, is the lead off track featuring The Road Heavy’s Jules Cardoso’s fierce powerhouse vocals. Bringing an Eastern vibe to the album’s “Shackled” & “The Machine” is Toronto Tabla Ensemble’s Razak Pirani. Talented flautist Ross Pearson whose spontaneously intricate pieces were all recorded in a single-take, adds colour on songs such as “Devils & Dollar Signs”, “Shackled”,& “Stardust” (which was featured on CBC Searchlight).
The album was recorded and engineered by Anthony Sestito at Edadic Music. With his dedication and attention to detail he helped to capture Andy’s vision for the album and bring it to life.
The Freedom Sessions was specially mastered for Vinyl and CD by Noah Mintz at Lacquer Channel Mastering, who has mastered albums for artists such as The Sheepdogs, Matt Mays, Wintersleep, Broken Social Scene, Billy Talent.

lyrics

Devil & Dollar Signs

Marching in a straight line

A weight of fear fills their hearts

The desert sun shining on them

They think about their lives back home

And the years that have passed them on

Wondering why they’re even fighting.

They hear that old familiar sound

Like thunder from above

They turn around and run for cover

A hopeless stare in a brother’s eye

As he struggles to hold on

His baby’s smile is all he ponders

Mother lies awake as she stares at the walls

Father says soon you’ll see him

Little does he know that his son is almost gone

He’s twenty three and barely breathing.

Smoke and mirrors

Sell those stories that you forged

Enemies

Fairy tales

Rivers of gold

Green colours bleed through

Red white and blue

Those stars shine

But only for the few

The damage we do

It’s time to face the truth

And say

Goodbye to all wars

And all the grieving

Say goodbye to all those

Devils & Dollar signs

Hello my mother

Wipe those tears from your eyes

And tell a father

His boy’s alive

Marching down Main Street

With their signs held to the skies

The city sun shining on them

They think about their young ones

And a time that will pass them by

Worried for their survival

They see the earth

dying right before their eyes

The reaper bears a suit and tie

Incorporating all that’s keeping us alive

Force every man to pay the price

Smoke and mirrors

Sell those stories that you forged

Hazy skies

Blackened waters

Poison soils

Green colours bleed through

Red white and blue

Those stars shine

But only for the few

The damage we do

It’s time to face the truth

And say goodbye to all the greed

And all pollution

Say goodbye to all those devils and dollar signs

Hello Mother Earth

Are you feeling alright

And give our young ones

A chance at life

Give our young ones

A chance at life
